Our Vision
The integration of robotics and artificial intelligence is about to change our world and offers immense potential to improve lives and create a better future. However, if this powerful technology remains in the hands of a few, it could have uncontrolled consequences: unbalanced profits, environmental degradation and social rejection. To avoid such consequences, we believe that this knowledge and technology must be developed democratically and under the collective supervision. At the same time, technological development has simplified the design and production of mechanical components and improved access to electronics, enabling a collaborative approach to sharing robotic hardware and promoting shared knowledge.
Our mission is to democratize robotics through open-source innovation, local manufacturing, and self-assembly. While some products can be built at home with reasonable quality, others require larger scale production, shared infrastructure and pooled expertise. This the support we want to provide.
Our Goals
Our primary objectives are sustainability, repairability, and the creation of common data and knowledge. We aim to develop simple yet powerful machines using sustainable materials, guided by open-source software and electronics. To achieve this, we focus on projects in the following areas:
Common Robots
Humanoid Robots, the most flexible machines, can be the next big step in human history. We dream of flourishing gardens mastered by mindful machines while humanity lives in peace and harmony and uses its time for art, science and the discovery of new worlds in space. So we want to want to build Common Robots and be the first to build superhuman machines for us, the people.
Common Objects and Art
These include tools and objects that enhance human-robot interaction and improve daily life—furniture, cargo bikes, lamps, and more. Additionally, we aim to design sustainable objects for joy, music, and art, such as instruments and kinetic sculptures.
Our Plan
Step 1: Building Modular Components
We will focus on developing simple, affordable, and repairable components that can be combined to create a humanoid robot. Each component will have standalone functionality, offering immediate utility for various tasks and applications. Beyond functionality, these components are designed to facilitate learning—both for AI systems to better interact with the physical world and for humans to gain hands-on experience with robotics and AI. Educational materials for self-assembly kits will therefore be a key part of our offerings.
Step 2: Developing CR1 Alpha
The ultimate goal is to build a humanoid robot with superhuman mechanics, called CR1 Alpha. It can be remotely controlled via telepresence, fostering global connectivity and reducing the need for travel and migration. As autonomous capabilities develop, CR1 Alpha will be designed to perform tasks that enhance human life in ways we have yet to imagine.
Democracy
We want to form a organisation with a democratic structure for the people that work at common mechanics, the people that own it and that buy, sell and design here. Details have to be discussed.
Finance
Our kits will feature captivating, well-designed mechanics built on standardized parts, open source electronics and mechanical parts easy to manufacture with laser cutting and 3d printing. While experienced makers can create these systems independently, the process can be time-intensive and inefficient. To address this, we plan to generate revenue by selling complete self-assembly kits to private users and kits including educational materials to institutions. Initially, we’ll handle production in-house, but as demand grows, we’ll collaborate with local manufacturers.
For Additional Revenue Streams we offer workshops that provide hands-on learning experiences, allowing participants to engage directly with our technology while we simultaneously gather valuable customer feedback. Additionally, we provide customization services, delivering tailored solutions designed to meet the specific needs and preferences of our users.
Why We Exist
Our vision is to empower individuals and communities to harness the transformative potential of robotics and AI. Through open-source collaboration, local production, and education, we aim to create sustainable, repairable, and innovative technology for a brighter future. Together, we can shape a world where advanced machines work in harmony with humanity, enabling progress and unlocking untapped potential.
